Scalable native content comes to Sweden

The German-born and Stockholm-based Alex Sattelmaier is introducing the native advertising technology to Sweden. Therefor he is using the proven native advertising technology of the largest native advertising developer and marketer in Germany, Seeding Alliance GmbH. Many publishers and an increasingly growing number of advertisers in Sweden are already working with sponsored articles or externally linking recommendation ads or traffic sharing widgets and similar. But a scalable distribution of full-length articles on different publisher sites, with an effective targeting isn’t possible in Sweden, yet.

Mr. Sattelmaier’s ultimate goal is to save the Swedish online users from irritating online ads and instead offer them more sponsored content that has quality and relevance beyond a pure marketing purpose. Enabling a scalable distribution of native ads and content is also a plus for publishers and advertisers, which is also demonstrated by the success Seeding Alliance GmbH had in Germany. Publishers can monetize their sites much more efficient and user friendly by showing ads and sponsored content that appeals to users both visually and in its substance. Advertisers at the same time get much more time, space and possibilities to bring users closer to their brand and products by storytelling instead of simply showing them a banner.

Hi Alex, first off – how did you end up moving to Sweden?

About five years ago, I wanted to take the next step in my career and moved to Stockholm for a Master program. Then I just ended up staying here. Mostly due to love, but also the country has captivated me. Digitalization has come much further here than in other European countries: 41% of households have a fiber connection (Germany: around 2%). It is totally normal here to submit your tax declaration on a smartphone or to sign contracts digitally on the go. Being interesting in all things tech, that excites me a lot.

How did you find out about Native Content, Advertising and German Seeding Alliance?

While using my favourite Swedish news app, I caught myself interestedly reading a sponsored article. Despite the fact that I’m otherwise an open critic of – in most cases disturbing – online ads. So I thought: If this ad format can appeal to a critical user like me, it has real potential. I couldn’t let go of this idea and so I continued thinking: why only show each article on individual publisher sites and thereby limit efficiency? Many publishers and an increasingly growing number of advertisers in Sweden are already working with sponsored articles or externally linking recommendation ads or traffic sharing widgets and similar. But talking to both sides, I realized that a scalable distribution of full-length articles on different publisher sites, with an effective targeting and other advanced possibilities, wasn’t possible at all.

After more research exploring the native advertising and content distribution technology, I ended up founding the company. The goal was to offer the concept in Sweden going forward – despite the fact that I had mostly been an end user so far and not involved deeply in the digital marketing industry. The contact to Seeding Alliance was finally made through a personal contact. I told a friend about my idea and he said he knew someone that had already successfully established such a technology in Germany. He initiated the contact, we met and MDs Coskun Tuna and Cevahir Ejder immediately liked the idea. Which is why we decided to cooperate and bring the technology to Sweden.

What’s your goal with the company?

My ultimate goal is for users like you and me to be less irritated by online ads, instead reading more sponsored content that has quality and relevance beyond a pure marketing purpose. In addition, enabling a scalable distribution of native ads and content is also great for publishers and advertisers, which is also demonstrated by the success Seeding Alliance had in Germany. Publishers can monetize their sites much more efficient and user friendly by showing ads and sponsored content that appeals to users both visually and in its substance. Advertisers at the same time get much more time, space and possibilities to bring users closer to their brand and products by storytelling instead of simply showing them a banner.

What are your hopes and concerns for the next months and years?

Ad blocker usage continues to grow and even Google is planning to integrate a blocker in its Chrome browser. The industry (incl. Google but also the IAB e.g. in Sweden) has started a number of initiatives that aim to set minimum standards for “acceptable” ads and to reduce the disturbance factor. This trend clearly shows that ads that interrupt the user’s experience and don’t deliver value aren’t likely to have a bright future.

The native ad and content formats are a great alternative in this context. It would be great to see the majority of relevant publishers and many advertisers in Sweden agree on that, and work together to enable a scalable, efficient future for this concept in the market. A concern I have is that some publishers and advertisers might not have the courage to test a technology or format that is relatively new to them – and instead choose to stay in the established paths. But I am optimistic and hope that native content will see a similar development and scaling as in Germany.

Thanks Alex, we wish you all the best!
